Program Description

What do gurus and spiritual masters really have to say about creativity and wanton punctuation abuse? Can a good backbend scandalize your nervous syntax? This workshop is embodied spiritual practice meets feral creative authenticity. With sweat. You ready?

Immerse yourself in (moderately) challenging, dynamic asana sequences alternating with specific writing exercises and precise yogic tools. Explore how a dedicated yoga practice can free your body’s most constricted energies, release your ego’s death grip on entrenched samskaras (patterns and fixations), and powerfully liberate your creative voice.

Discover how writing and yoga influence and inform one another with Mark Morford in a weekend version of one of the Bay Area’s most popular and unique yoga/creative workshops. It’s one part energized yoga practice, one part fearless creative writing workshop, one part expertly guided dharma discussion—taking turns with each, blurring the edges of all. You will experience:

  • Vinyasa yoga, pranayama (breathwork), and yoga nidra
  • Writing exercises and discussion
  • Shaiva Tantra philosophy, altar puja, and everyday ritual
  • Optional reading aloud, minimal weeping, and very few group hugs.

You will write, practice, question everything you think you know, and then write again until you fall into a bewildered trance, forget your own name, and fall prostrate to your muse. You will take home infinite wisdom and perfect enlightenment for all ages and epochs, and a nice 20-page handout.

    Mark Morford

    Devotional vinyasa yoga teacher

    Mark Morford has been teaching devotional vinyasa yoga classes and workshops in San Francisco for more than 15 years. He is creator of the Yoga for Writers (Y4W) and Everyday Sorcery for Urban Mystics programs for inspired yogis, and is one of the principal instructors for Yoga Tree San Francisco‰’s teacher training programs.

    Since 1998, Mark has been an award-winning columnist and culture critic for SFGate and the San Francisco Chronicle, with a cult-like following based on his infamous ‰Notes & Errata‰ column. He‰ is a contributing writer for numerous publications, including Huffington Post, Yoga Journal, The Sun, and Sex+Design.

    He is also the author of The Daring Spectacle: Adventures in Deviant Journalism and the creator of Mark Morford’s Apothecary, an iOS app. He leads popular immersions and retreats internationally.
