Think outside the mat and explore an exhilarating, one-of-a-kind fusion of yoga and modern dance with celebrated instructor and choreographer Annie Parr.
Modern Yoga is a dynamic, mat-less class bridging vinyasa yoga, mind-body fitness modalities, and floor-based modern dance principles. Founded by Annie Parr and Emily Daly-Fromherz, Modern Yoga emphasizes efficiency, explosive power, sensitivity, phrasing, and clarity.
By layering asana, vigorous sequences on and off the ground, and moving intentionally with music, the feeling of a dance emerges. Choreographed and clearly guided, Modern Yoga embodies the flow of a yoga class with the personality of a dance class.
This weekend, look forward to:
- Widening your approach to transitions, musicality, and flow
- Artful movement patterns to stretch, tone, and ground your body
- Stimulating grace and fun through motion to connect with your authentic self
- Immersing yourself in a mentally and physically awakening practice
- Moving stretches, deep release work, principles of the Bartenieff Method, and other unique movement.
With Annie’s expert teaching, overcome any apprehension about guided dance classes, or dive deeper into a yoga or dance practice that you already love. Dancer or not, yogi or not, any athletic and artful-minded individuals looking to creatively expand their practice are invited to this weekend of play and discovery.
Founder of Modern Yoga and RoCo Dance Marin County
Annie Parr is a dancer, choreographer, and teacher, and she is founder of both Modern Yoga, and RoCoDance Marin County. Annie actively mentors instructors and dancers through RoCo’s teacher training. She prepares young dancers for college dance programs and careers as professionals.
Annie has been a professor of dance at the University of California, Berkeley, Sonoma State University, and San Francisco State University, and she guest teaches nationally. As both a dance conservatory and recreational training program for youth and adults, RoCo offers 300 classes weekly in its two locations in Mill Valley and Fairfax.
Annie completed her 500-hour yoga teacher training with Nubia Teixiera and is a certified RYT through Yoga Alliance. She has presented at Wanderlust Festival and hosts regular workshops and classes for the public.
Annie has received awards as a choreographer and performer in the Bay Area and is the recipient of the National Dance Week Bay Area Dancers Choice Award and a Milley Award for lifetime achievement in the arts.
Annie received a bachelor’s degree in dance from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and was a member of Della Davidson Dance Theater and Margaret Jenkins Dance Company before she founded RoCo Dance in 1993.View Bio Page
Yoga instructors are highly encouraged to participate and discover artful yet efficient transitions and sequencing, sparking new innovations in teaching.<br />
Learning dance principles as an adult can be an intimidating but rewarding endeavor. Annie’s well-known approach to teaching dance and yoga is accessible to a broad audience.
Work in stages to abandon the mat: start with an on-the-mat opening class, eventually moving entirely off the mat and into a complete Modern Yoga class.
