Program Description

Are you a yoga teacher interested in compassionately providing the profound benefits of practice to individuals healing from trauma? Or are you a mental health professional with a desire to incorporate yoga techniques into your client care?

David Emerson, E-RYT, TCTSY-F, creator of Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY), offers a weekend training to help yoga teachers and others provide trauma-sensitive practices that feel safe and accessible. This weekend workshop will introduce methods that support yoga teachers in making their classes more trauma-informed and give mental health clinicians practices to use with their clients.

Guided by one of the world’s leading voices on yoga and trauma, you will study:

  • The latest trauma theories and neurophysiology
  • Theoretical underpinnings and methodology of TCTSY
  • An in-depth look at scientific studies involving TCTSY and its life-changing effects.

The innovative Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga model has been shown to significantly reduce post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms for people with complex trauma and to improve quality of life. It has helped thousands of people—from military veterans to survivors of chronic abuse.

    David Emerson, E-RYT, TCTSY-F

    Trauma-sensitive yoga pioneer and expert

    David Emerson is the founder and director of Yoga Services for the Trauma Center at the Justice Resource Institute in Brookline, Massachusetts, where he coined the term “trauma-sensitive yoga.” He was responsible for curriculum development, supervision, and oversight of the yoga intervention component of a first-of-its-kind, NIH-funded study, conducted by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk to assess the utility and feasibility of yoga for adults with treatment-resistant PTSD. Their model, Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY), was listed in the United States as an evidence-based treatment for trauma in 2017.

    David has developed, facilitated, and supervised TCTSY groups for rape crisis centers, domestic violence programs, residential programs for youth, military bases, survivors of terrorism, and Veterans Administration centers and clinics. In addition to coauthoring several articles on the subject of yoga and trauma, David is the author of Trauma-Sensitive Yoga in Therapy and the coauthor of Overcoming Trauma through Yoga.
