Meredith Monk
Performing arts pioneer
Meredith Monk is a composer, singer, director, choreographer, filmmaker, and creator of new opera, music-theater works, film, and installations.
Recognized as one of the most unique and influential artists of our time, she is a pioneer in what are now called “extended vocal technique” and “interdisciplinary performance.”
Over the last six decades she has received numerous awards and honors, most recently the 2017 Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize and a 2015 National Medal of Arts from President Barack Obama.
Meredith has made more than a dozen recordings, and her work has been presented at major venues throughout the world.
A longtime Shambhala Buddhist practitioner, she presents workshops and master classes at several institutions, including Omega, Garrison Institute, and Zen Mountain Monastery, and has co-taught workshops with Acharya Judy Lief and Lanny Harrison both in New York and at Naropa University. In 1999, Meredith performed a vocal offering for the Dalai Lama as part of the World Sacred Music Festival in Los Angeles.
