Program Description


If you are a woman struggling with money stress or feeling overwhelmed by the topic of personal finance and investing, you are not alone. The good news is you can learn to nurture a holistic, practical definition of healthy, joyful spending.

Join financial literacy advocate Manisha Thakor, CFA, CFP, and use mindfulness to explore key elements in your life or money history that are holding you back from financial harmony. You don’t need to “do” something about your finances to “have” enough money to “be” happy. The MoneyZen philosophy teaches you how to “be” clear about what to “do” to arrive at a place where you “have” joy and well-being.

Through lecture, group discussion, sharing, breakout pods, journaling, and physical movement, you will define specific actions and tactical steps to achieve personal finance and investing. You will explore:

  • Joy-based spending: what it is and how to implement it in your daily life
  • Investing fundamentals: five things to know about your investment portfolio
  • Financial fluency: identify specific financial areas that need more TLC
  • Living from a soul-centered place: your checkbook and calendar can reveal whether your daily habits are in alignment with your core values
  • A personal money manifesto: identify new attitudes and behaviors that lead to financial well-being.

You will define what true wealth means to you and take home a concrete plan to develop a loving relationship with money, regardless of your age or income level.

The intention behind the course is for every student to walk away with 1 to 3 specific, highly tactical financial action steps to improve your life upon leaving the workshop. Topics will span from the basics of investing to exploring our money histories and influences. Each course is tailored to the specific needs of the students.

Student-based topics in the past include:

  • dealing with credit card or student loan debt
  • how to have “awkward” money conversations with your spouse / family / friends
  • how to get young adult children to stop shopping at the bank of mom and dad and
  • how to survive the “sandwich stage” where you are taking care of both children and elderly parents.

This class provides a unique mix of a highly practical yet also soulful and heartfelt approach to creating financial calm, confidence, and clarity. Manisha likes to call this state MoneyZen and strives to have every student on the path towards it by the end of the weekend.

    Manisha Thakor, MBA, CFA, CFP®

    Financial literacy advocate and financial planner for women

    A nationally renowned financial literacy advocate for women, Manisha Thakor is Vice President of Financial Education at the Seattle-based wealth management firm, Brighton Jones. Her mission is to help clients “Live a Richer Life”—literally and figuratively.

    Manisha is the coauthor of two critically acclaimed personal finance books, On My Own Two Feet: A Modern Girl’s Guide to Personal Finance and Get Financially Naked: How to Talk Money with Your Honey. Manisha is a member of the Wall Street Journal’s Wealth Experts Panel, sits on faculty at the Omega Institute, and serves on the board of the National Endowment for Financial Education.

    Manisha’s financial advice has been featured in a wide range of national media outlets, including CNN, PBS, NPR, the Today show, Rachel Ray, the New York Times, the Boston Globe, the Los Angeles Times, Real SimpleWoman’s Day, Glamour, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, and Women’s Health.

    Manisha earned her master’s in business administration from Harvard Business School in 1997 and her bachelor of arts from Wellesley College in 1992. She is also a CFA charterholder and CFP® practitioner. Manisha lives in Portland, Oregon, where she revels in the Third Wave coffee scene and the stunning beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

    Women wishing to have a healthier relationship with money or who has a basic knowledge of finance and wishes to enhance it is welcome.

    Special Details

    There will be one 45-minute optional dance session at the end of the course. Students who are movement challenged may observe or skip this. There will be financial lessons interspersed with the “NIA-like” dance moves and a handout for anyone who doesn’t want to do the dance portion. Please bring a journal.
