Program Description

Taking care of people is some of the most rewarding work we do as human beings. When we do it as overworked healthcare professionals, it can burden and exhaust us at profound levels. Studies show that a great many doctors, nurses, and healthcare providers suffer from a jaded perspective, a decreased capacity to feel empathy, and a dwindling sense of professional satisfaction.

How did we get here?

In this weekend retreat, integrative medicine physician Dr. Akil Palanisamy and co-director of the California Center for Functional Medicine Chris Kresser, MS, LAc, examine the root causes of burnout for healthcare practitioners and the ways to overcome them.

Through discussion, writing, creative expression, and artistic activities you will:

  • Rediscover your passion for medicine and reconnect with a sense of meaning and purpose in your work
  • Explore practical steps you can take to reclaim your health and well-being
  • Rediscover important parts of yourself that lack expression and have been neglected in the busyness of life
  • Learn to create a practice that reawakens your sense of energy and vitality in the workplace.

Leave with tools and techniques to create the foundation for healing and transforming yourself, those you care for, and the culture of our healthcare system.

    Akil Palanisamy, MD

    Integrative medicine physician

Akil Palanisamy is an integrative medicine physician and author of “The Paleovedic Diet: A Complete Program to Burn Fat, Increase Energy, and Reverse Disease”.  He is board-certified in family medicine, and blends his Western medical training with effective holistic approaches, including functional medicine and Ayurveda, the traditional medicine of India.
“Dr. Akil” studied biochemistry at Harvard University, received his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco, and completed his residency at Stanford University. He also completed a fellowship in integrative medicine with Dr. Andrew Weil at the University of Arizona, and is certified by the Center for Mind-Body Medicine at Georgetown University.
Dr. Akil learned Ayurveda in Southern India, and found a powerful synergy in combining Ayurveda with the paleo diet in his clinical practice.  This led him to coin the term “Paleovedic Diet”, which refers to a nutrient-dense customized Paleo diet that incorporates spices, specific fruits and vegetables, intermittent fasting, and an Ayurvedic lifestyle.
Dr. Akil has been a consultant with The Medical Board of California for many years.  He sees patients at the Sutter Health Institute for Health and Healing, where he also serves as Physician Director for Community Education.

  • Why Attend
    • Rekindle your enthusiasm for helping others as well as helping to transform the world of medicine. Small group activities and experiential exercises ensure ample opportunities for connections and developing a sense of community.

    • Feeling defeated, pessimistic, fatigued, or disconnected from your authentic self detracts from your ability to do your best work as a doctor, healer, or health-conscious person. Get the tools to overcome those challenges and share your skills in the ways you intended.

    • "Healing" involves trusting in the fact that things can change-that a new course can be carved out. Take this optimism beyond medicine, beyond health, into your environment, and across the profession.
