Are there life challenges you keep bumping up against? Imagine what it would mean to be the best version of yourself, every day; to be a true “mensch,” a person of extraordinary character. Harness the wisdom of the 1000-year-old Jewish spiritual discipline of Mussar and learn how to focus on personal and spiritual growth in the midst of a busy, involved life.
Guided by Greg Marcus, PhD, and Nancy Weiss, LCSW, you will experience an interactive weekend of teaching your heart by doing. You will engage in easy, fun practices that incorporate cognitive and experiential activities, and you will explore:
- Mindfulness meditation, visualization, and small group and dyadic exercises
- Art activities such as collage, drawing, and journaling to help you connect with your inner voice and deepen self-reflection
- Spiritual texts using questions to enhance your understanding of the Mussar ideas
- Simple practices to help you internalize learning when the group is not in session (e.g., smiling at a someone you do not know).
The weekend builds toward creating your own personal action plan for how to live and work with gratitude, patience, compassion, truth, and joy. You will go home with an understanding of the path of Mussar, empowered to change habits that are keeping you from getting the most out of life.
This workshop is open to anyone with an interest in how ancient Jewish wisdom is relevant to modern life. Jewish and non-Jewish people alike are welcome.
Greg Marcus, PhD
Mussar pioneer and facilitator
Greg Marcus is a practitioner, facilitator, and innovator of American Mussar, a 21st-century spiritual practice for an authentic and meaningful life. He is a graduate of the Mussar Institute’s facilitator training program and has been practicing and teaching for five years.
Greg offers guidance on how to lead a life of mindful harmony and spiritual integrity, drawing upon timeless Jewish teachings and contemporary wisdom. He has a doctorate from MIT, and worked for ten years as a marketer in Silicon Valley helping to guide cutting edge technology for genetics research to market.
Mussar taught him why he was a workaholic and gave him the tools to bring healing and balance into his life. He started teaching and facilitating Mussar groups within months of starting to practice it, creating his own curriculum for work-life balance.
Today he is a writer, speaker, workshop facilitator, and stay-at-home dad. He is the author of The Spiritual Practice of Good Actions: Finding Balance Through the Soul Traits of Mussar.Nancy Weiss, LCSW
Depth psychotherapist and Mussar facilitator
Nancy Weiss is a psychotherapist, spiritual director, and Mussar facilitator dedicated to helping others discover unique pathways to their soul’s expression. Her private practice blends depth psychology, dream work, and expressive arts.
She facilitates Mussar groups in Los Angeles, and as coordinator of Manchim, the Facilitator Training Program for The Mussar Institute, she leads online trainings for rabbis and lay students around the world.
Nancy’s personal Mussar practice inspires her to be conscious and present in ways that enrich her connection to herself, to others, and to the Divine.
As a collage artist, poet, and SoulCollage® facilitator, Nancy guides people in bringing an expressive voice to the Mussar traits and to other Jewish spiritual principles. She has led numerous expressive arts workshops and trainings for psychotherapists, educators, families, and other organizations, including UCLArts and Healing.
Nancy developed MeCards4Kids®, a collage and poetry adaptation of the SoulCollage process for children. She piloted this process in a multi-age elementary classroom, and coauthored How to Make MeCards4Kids: Creative Expression for Children and the Grown-Ups in Their Lives.View Bio Page
