This offering is a 5-day intensive version of the empirically supported 8-week Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) program co-developed by Christopher Germer, PhD, a leader in the integration of mindfulness and psychotherapy and Kristin Neff, PhD, a pioneer in the research on self-compassion. Since 2010, MSC has been taught to over 50,000 people around the world. Michelle Becker, LMFT, was the first person to teach MSC independently of the developers and she is one of a small number of MSC Teacher Trainers.
MSC combines the skills of mindfulness and self-compassion to enhance our capacity for emotional well-being. Most of us feel compassion when a close friend is struggling. What would it be like to receive the same caring attention from yourself when you need it most?
Burgeoning research shows that self-compassion is strongly associated with emotional well-being, coping with life challenges, lower levels of anxiety and depression, healthy habits such as diet and exercise, and more satisfying personal relationships. It is an inner strength that enables us to be more fully human—to acknowledge our shortcomings, learn from them, and make necessary changes with an attitude of kindness and self-respect.
In MSC you’ll learn to:
- Practice mindfulness and self-compassion in daily life
- Understand the science of self-compassion
- Handle difficult emotions with greater ease
- Motivate yourself with kindness rather than criticism
- Transform challenging relationships, old and new
- Manage caregiver fatigue
- Practice the art of savoring and self-appreciation
- Teach simple self-compassion skills to others.
This program is designed for members of the general public. Meditation experience is not necessary to participate in MSC. All are welcome!

Christopher Germer, PhD
Clinical psychologist, author, and editor
Christopher Germer is a clinical psychologist in private practice who specializes in mindfulness- and compassion-based psychotherapy. A founding member of the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy, an organization dedicated to teaching mental-health professionals how to effectively integrate ancient Buddhist psychology into modern psychotherapy, Dr. Germer is a clinical instructor in psychology at Harvard Medical School.
The author of The Mindful Path to Self-Compassion and coeditor of Mindfulness and Psychotherapy, Dr. Germer lectures and conducts workshops internationally on the art and science of mindful self-compassion. A committed student of insight meditation (vipassana), Dr. Germer is codirector of Harvard Medical School’s annual Meditation and Psychotherapy Conference, which hosted His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 2009.
Dr. Germer’s main clinical interest is the necessity of self-compassion and mindfulness for managing intense and difficult emotions. He has codeveloped, with renowned self-compassion researcher Dr. Kristin Neff, an 8-week Mindful Self-Compassion program, currently being taught around the world.View Bio PageMichelle Becker, LMFT
Compassion for Couples developer, Mindful Self-Compassion teacher
Michelle Becker, developer of the Compassion for Couples program, is a licensed marriage and family therapist in private practice in San Diego, utilizing mindfulness and compassion based approaches to psychotherapy. In addition she is a certified teacher of Mindful Self-Compassion, Compassion Cultivation Training, and The Daring Way™ and Rising Strong™ programs.
Michelle is a senior teacher trainer, mentor, and cofounder of the teacher-training program in Mindful Self-Compassion. She teaches and speaks on the topics of compassion for self and others nationally and internationally, especially in regard to relationships, healthcare, and the workplace. She particularly delights in supporting compassion teachers.
Practice tangible skills to pause, reflect, and relate from a place of calm and self-confidence even in the most difficult circumstances.
