Lovingkindness is a meditation that cultivates our natural capacity for an open and loving heart.
Although frequently denigrated in our culture as simplistic and weak, the quality of kindness has an inherent power to transform our worldview from one of fear and isolation to one rooted in clarity, courage, compassion, and genuine happiness. Lovingkindness is traditionally offered with meditations that enrich compassion, joy in the happiness of others, and equanimity.

Lovingkindness meditation is also referred to as “metta,” which means friendship, gentle, or lovingkindness in Pali, the language of the original Buddhist teachings. Metta is like a gentle rain that falls indiscriminately upon everything. It is a steady, unconditional sense of connection that touches all beings without exception, including oneself.
The Buddha first taught metta as an antidote to fear, which is still useful for us today. It also helps us develop greater concentration, access fearlessness, and deepen our capacity to love—in a meditation practice and throughout our daily lives.
Vipassana meditation teacher and author
Sharon Salzberg, one of America’s most well-known Buddhist meditation teachers and authors, has been leading meditation retreats throughout the world for more than three decades. She began teaching Vipassana (insight) meditation when she returned from intensive studies in India in the early 1970s.
With Joseph Goldstein and Jack Kornfield, Sharon cofounded the Insight Meditation Society (IMS) in Barre, Massachusetts, which has since become one of the most prominent and active meditation centers in the West. She and Joseph Goldstein expanded their vision by cofounding the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies (BCBS), and the Forest Refuge, a long-term retreat center.
A New York Times best-selling author, Sharon focuses her teachings on both Vipassana and the deep and profound practice of metta (lovingkindness) meditation. Her numerous books include Lovingkindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness; Faith: Trusting Your Own Deepest Experience; A Heart as Wide as the World; and the bestseller Real Happiness: The Power of Meditation, A 28-Day Program.
