Program Description

Have you ever felt that words are not enough to express your life? You can deepen your relationship with yourself and your world by exploring another language—a visual, symbolic, soul-filled language to discern what is not quite ready for speech.

Join Heidi Darr-Hope, MFA, and use art making to discover the creative muse offered by nature and the seasons. You will begin each day with an inspirational quote to guide your creative practice.

You will also explore:

  • Hands-on studio time with demonstrations of art-making techniques to sink into your creative process and discover your own visual vocabulary
  • The basics of using color, composition, collage, found object assemblage, and metal tooling, and how to use images, colors, and shapes to express that which cannot be expressed in words
  • Reflective journal writing prompted by open-ended questions
  • Group and one-on-one discussions to learn from each other’s discoveries and insights
  • How to generate a deeper sense of spirit, and create art that reflects your voice within.

As you discover there is no right or wrong way to create art, you re-envision the purpose of art making and take home techniques that help you embrace it as a way to nurture calm anchored in creativity.

No previous art experience is necessary. Anyone looking to discover or reconnect with their creativity, find quiet reflective time, or recover from a life-disrupting event or illness that fills you with doubt, grief, or depression is welcome to come learn how to create bravely.

  • Faculty Bio
    Heidi Darr-Hope, MFA

    Professional artist and teacher

Heidi Darr-Hope has worked as a professional artist and teacher for over 40 years. Having lost her six-year-old brother to brain cancer at age 10, she created Healing Icons® to weave together her life experiences and professional art techniques into an interdisciplinary approach, using art as the vehicle to promote healing to those whose lives have been impacted by cancer.

Finding that making art alone was not enough, along her healing journey she studied Mexican death traditions, Jungian psychology, Tibetan mandalas, and expressive writing. She believes that we as humans can claim our inalienable birthright to express what can’t be expressed with words.

Exhibited both nationally and internationally, her art has been collected by over 30 national and international corporations, as well as by numerous private collectors, including the Columbia Museum of Art, the South Carolina State Museum, and the South Carolina Arts Commission.

A yogi, meditator, and enthusiastic world traveler, Heidi is also an ordained interfaith minister and a Certified Dream Facilitator with the Haden Institute.
