Program Description

If we can align our eye, mind and heart together in a single moment of direct, unfiltered perception, we can connect with the vivid brilliance of our visual world. When we have a mind of stillness and equanimity, the world displays itself as it is for us to express with our cameras.

This week join Julie DuBose and Michael Wood, cofounders of the Miksang Institute for Contemplative Photography, for an introduction to this practice of joining meditative mind with the visual world and expressing our perceptions with our camera.

You will learn:

  • How to perceive the world without the overlays of labels, preferences, associations, and thoughts about what you are seeing
  • To stay in the present moment, ready and available to capture any moment of beauty
  • Essential elements of photography—including point of focus, depth of field, and accurate exposure—to help you create images that capture your direct experience.

Photographers with some experience and a passion to see things in a new way are welcome. As your perception is freed from preconceived ideas it becomes more direct and unfabricated, allowing you to appreciate the world as it manifests itself to you and share that experience through your art.

    Michael Wood

Michael Wood is the original founder and principal developer of the Miksang Training curriculum at the Miksang Institute for Contemplative Photography in Boulder, Colorado, and one of the originators of the Contemplative Photography movement in modern photography.

An award-winning commercial photographer in Toronto for 18 years, Michael eventually began to combine his photographic training, meditation experience, and the Dharma/Shambhala Art teachings of Chögyam Trungpa. The synthesis of these three components formed the basis of the Miksang Contemplative Photography approach. The Miksang approach shows us that with our eye, mind, and heart fully unified and engaged in the present moment, we can see the world as it manifests around us and express this experience of seeing with our camera.

Michael worked closely with the Vajra Regent Ösel Tendzin, the Dharma heir of Trungpa Rinpoche, to develop the Miksang teachings. He is coauthor, with Andy Karr, of The Practice of Contemplative Photography: Seeing the World with Fresh Eyes, author of Graceful Appearance: Passion, Perception, Expression, and author of Opening the Good Eye: A Path to True Seeing. He teaches the Miksang Training Process throughout the world.
