For many of us, drawing can be a mysterious or inaccessible process reserved for a “talented” few. Dr. Betty Edwards’ groundbreaking Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain debunked this myth—anyone can learn how to draw, and draw well.
Join painter and printmaker Lisbeth Firmin for an intensive immersion in demonstrations and studio exercises that pack a semester-long art course into five days. You will develop the perceptual skills you need to draw with confidence, whether you are new to the medium or wish to expand your capabilities.
You will explore:
- The relationship of drawing and creativity to specialized functions of the right- and left-brain hemispheres and to ways of connecting to a new way of seeing
- A carefully sequenced process designed to unveil your ability to capture life as you see it, and strategies to produce skilled drawings
- Tips on how to shift your perception and see light, depth, dimensions, and proportions to better capture what inspires you.
You will go home with a new, enhanced way of seeing the world around you and strategies you can continue to develop to capture what inspires you in ways you never thought possible.
Painter, printmaker, and drawing teacher
Lisbeth Firmin is a full-time painter and printmaker known for her urban landscapes. She is an accredited teacher of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, and was trained by Dr. Betty Edwards. She has been teaching this technique for more than 25 years.
She teaches painting and printmaking at various art institutes, universities, schools, and artist residencies around the United States. She is the recipient of many awards, grants, and fellowships, including a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship for Printmaking (Lily Auchincloss Fellow), and full fellowships to the MacDowell Colony, National Seashore Cape Cod Dune Shack Residency, Vermont Studio Center, and Saltonstall Arts Colony.
Using Dr. Edwards’ exercises combined with her own techniques, Firmin’s teaching methods encourage both professional and beginning students to find their unique ways of seeing. Things To Bring
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain materials list:
- 2B, 4B, 6B drawing pencil
- Woodless drawing pencil (4B or 6B optional, these are just fun tools)
- Hand-held pencil sharpener (It’s a good idea to buy a new one and test it before leaving the art supply store. The ones with little trash cans attached are especially nice.)
- 4B and 6B graphite sticks
- Pencil-top erasers (These fit on top of your pencils, and usually have a nice chisel shape; buy at least ten.)
- White plastic eraser (The Pentel Clic-brand one is good.)
- Kneaded eraser
- Vis-à-Vis water-soluble marking pen
- 14” X 17” Strathmore Drawing Tablet, #400 series, 80 lb.
- Drawing board or support for the tablet. I use a piece of tempered Masonite, which is about 17” X 20”. If you choose something like foam core, make sure it is at least ½” thick, so that it doesn’t flex when you are drawing.
- Portfolio to hold your drawings, paper, and board; this could be a paper or cloth portfolio (some of them come with the drawing board inside).
- Ruler is optional; my favorite is the 18” flexible, cork-backed ruler.
*It is often very difficult to procure drawing tools once the class begins, so try to have a complete set of tools when you arrive for the first class meeting.
