Program Description

Statistics show that one in ten people who enter a therapy office or clinic are addicted, yet only 10 percent receive treatment.

Robert Navarra, PsyD, MFT, MAC, creator of the Couple Recovery Development Approach (CRDA), offers this weekend workshop for therapists, counselors, and professionals who work with couples struggling with addiction as well as those in recovery from alcohol, drugs, and/or behavioral addictions. In this workshop, Dr. Navarra will also integrate over a decade of experience and research using Drs. John and Julie Gottman’s Sound Relationship House model.

Through lecture, discussion, and examples, you will learn:

  • Why couples counseling is more effective than individual therapy in identifying addiction and moving the addict and family into recovery
  • How to best assess and treat addiction—from alcohol and drugs to gambling, eating, and everything in between
  • Tools and strategies to help couples address addiction and support recovery together.

Drawing from the fields of addiction treatment, mental health, and couples counseling—and integrating current research findings with knowledge from clinical practice—this weekend will provide you with clear descriptions of techniques and exercises you can use right away with couples and small groups.

    Robert Navarra, PsyD, MFT, MAC,

Master Gottman therapist specializing in couples and addiction

Dr. Navarra is a certified master Gottman therapist, consultant, speaker, and trainer. Based on his research at Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto, California, Dr. Navarra developed the Couple Recovery Development Approach (CRDA), a relational model of addiction assessment and treatment.

Integrating CRDA with Drs. John and Julie Gottman’s Sound Relationship House model, Dr. Navarra has designed a series of workshops for recovering couples and the therapists and counselors who work with them. In collaboration with Dr. John Gottman, he is currently working on a randomized clinical trial of the CRDA model in treatment programs.

A popular presenter at national conferences, Dr. Navarra teaches graduate classes on addictive disorders at Santa Clara University and has trained therapists nationally and internationally. With Drs. John and Julie Gottman he has coauthored several book chapters and contributed to articles on Gottman Therapy for the Encyclopedia of Couple and Family Therapy(January 2018).

  • Why Attend
    • While addiction is often referred to as a “family disease,” current approaches in recovery typically do not provide treatment approaches that address or account for the relationship between addict and partner.

    • Learn a relationship approach to healing—one that includes the recovery for the person with a substance use disorder, their partner's recovery, and their relationship recovery.

    • The tools and interventions taught in this workshop are adapted from the Gottman Method to help couples increase communication and understanding, establish appropriate boundaries, and heal from the impact of addiction and from the impact of recovery.
