Program Description

It’s easy to get saturated with messages that heighten our fear and sadness about the world—and now more than ever it is vital to understand the importance of joy as central to spiritual practice. We must stay connected to that part of our interior world that makes life worth living. Our own cultivation of well-being and joy can become our gift to a troubled world.

Join James Baraz, MA, and Jane Baraz, MA, for a weekend workshop based on their popular five-month Awakening Joy course in which thousands have participated since 2003. Using principles and practices drawn from Buddhist philosophy, you will learn:

  • Important concepts and supportive practices to develop your natural capacity for well-being and happiness
  • Techniques to develop gratitude and self-love
  • How to open up to the “hard stuff” as a path to joy
  • Tools for finding joy in the happiness of others.

Joy is a rich feeling of vitality and well-being that is characterized by engagement with life and with meeting its ups and downs with authenticity and perspective. It can look very different from person to person, and through this program, you will discover how joy expresses itself uniquely through you.

In addition, James and Jane will support you in sharing these principles and practices with others so you can help awaken well-being in everyone you know.

    Jane Baraz, MA

    Meditation and mindfulness teacher

    Jane Baraz has been a mindfulness practitioner since 1976 when she began attending Vipassana retreats.

    She was on the Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s board of directors for its first eight years. Jane teaches Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) at the University of California San Francisco’s Osher Center for Integrative Medicine and the Cancer Support Community. She’s also a trained teacher in Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC), which she teaches at Spirit Rock, the Women’s Cancer Resource Center, and to private clients.

    Jane enjoys teaching Awakening Joy workshops and retreats with her husband, James Baraz, in California and internationally.

    James Baraz, MA

    Expert meditation teacher, creator of Awakening Joy course

    James Baraz has been a meditation teacher since 1978. He created the popular online Awakening Joy course, which he has taught to thousands of participants since 2003. He is the coauthor of Awakening Joy: 10 Steps to Happiness, the book based on the course, as well as coauthor of Awakening Joy for Kids.

    James is a cofounder and teacher at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, California, and a guiding teacher for One Earth Sangha, a website devoted to expressing a Buddhist response to climate change. He has contributed blog posts to the Huffington Post and his course, Awakening Joy, has been covered on Oprah.com.
