Program Description

Interpersonal relationships are the ultimate source of happiness and of challenges. What are the factors that determine whether partners will end up experiencing love and fulfillment in their relationships?

This workshop helps you answer that question by providing a theoretical model that integrates attachment theory, interpersonal neurobiology, and separation theory. In this eye-opening weekend, psychology and relationship experts Dr. Lisa Firestone and Joyce Catlett, MA, impart a critical road map for developing and maintaining intimacy.

The weekend begins by collectively defining love—what it is and what it is not. Then, through lecture, video excerpts, role-play, and group discussion, you will learn:

  • The developmental factors that impact your partner selection and inform your way of relating to them
  • How to help yourself and others challenge defensive behaviors and critical inner voices—remnants of attachment patterns that interfere with closeness and intimacy
  • Elements of emotion-focused therapy along with innovative cognitive/affective/behavioral therapy to address adult attachment issues
  • The foundation of “healthy sexuality” and how to enhance the sexual component of an intimate relationship.

This workshop is an invaluable opportunity for anyone interested in having better relationships, whether that means choosing better partners or working to better the relationship you’re currently in. It is also particularly valuable for those working in mental health as it provides effective techniques you can incorporate into your practice.

  • Faculty Bio
    Lisa Firestone, PhD

    Clinical psychologist, relationship guide, suicide and violence expert

    A clinical psychologist, Dr. Firestone is a national and international voice on the topics of couple relations, parenting, suicide, and violence. She maintains a private practice in Santa Barbara, California and is a sought-after consultant on the management of high-risk clients. In her intensive voice therapy training seminars, Dr. Firestone teaches clients and practitioners how to reveal unexplored parts of their personality by putting words to subconscious, destructive thoughts.

    In collaboration with Dr. Robert Firestone, Dr. Firestone’s studies have resulted in the publication of several psychological assessments including Firestone Assessment of Self-Destructive Thoughts (FAST) and the Firestone Assessment of Violent Thoughts (FAVT). The director of research and education at The Glendon Association and senior editor for the mental health website, Dr. Firestone is an accomplished lecturer, representing The Glendon Association at national and international conferences.

    Dr. Firestone has authored and coauthored several books including Sex and Love in Intimate Relationships, Conquer Your Critical Inner Voice, Creating a Life of Meaning and Compassion and, most recently, The Self Under Siege. She is also a popular blogger on Psychology Today and the Huffington Post, writing on topics such as love, interpersonal relationships, the inner critic, and parenting in the age of technology.

    Joyce Catlett, MA

    Mental health advocate and film producer

    Joyce Catlett began her career in psychology as a children’s mental health advocate, working with autistic children. A founding member of The Glendon Association, she has been a national lecturer and workshop facilitator in the areas of couples’ relations and child abuse prevention. With Glendon, she has co-produced close to 40 video documentaries on a wide range of mental health topics.

    Joyce trains mental health professionals in voice therapy methodology, has been instrumental in the development and training of instructors in Compassionate Child Rearing: A Parenting Education Program, a program for educators and professionals working with parents in comprehensive prevention/mental health services.

    An author and lecturer, Joyce has collaborated on numerous books including: The Self Under Siege, Conquer Your Critical Inner Voice, Fear of Intimacy, Creating a Life of Meaning and Compassion, Sex and Love in Intimate Relationships, and The Ethics of Interpersonal Relationships.
