Program Description

In the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the practice of mindfulness is learned to pacify afflictive emotions, quiet inner chatter, and reduce stress. But it can, and should, be applied to any day-to-day activity—eating, walking, sitting, standing, and even sleeping. The true goal of “mindfulness” is to nurture a constant presence in all of our activities, a state that is effortlessly free of distraction.

Over this immersive weekend, Lama Migmar Tseten will guide you, step-by-step, in a deeply traditional philosophy of true awareness. His ancient practice is based on two factors: drenpa (memory) and shézhin (awareness). Drenpa means to bring an object, such as the breath, into the mind. Shézhin means to maintain focused awareness on that object which has been brought to mind. When drenpa and shézhin are combined, this is the definition of “mindfulness” (drenpa nyewar zhagpa). This combination will empower you to:

  • Cultivate love, compassion, joy, and equanimity for yourself and others
  • Wake to the deepest nature of reality through superior insight (lhagthong)
  • Experience the union of profound wisdom and expansive compassion within.

    Lama Migmar Tseten

    Tibetan Buddhist chaplain, teacher, author

    As a Harvard University Buddhist Chaplain for more than twenty years, Lama Migmar Tseten has served faculty and staff on campus as well as at the Sakya Institute for Buddhist Studies which he founded in 1990 with the patronage of the Sakya Trichen.

    He received both a traditional and a contemporary education in India, graduating with an Acharya degree in 1979 from the Tibetan Institute of Sanskrit University. Awarded a medal for academic excellence by the Dalai Lama, he was also recognized as Khenpo for his scholarship and service to the dharma by the Sakya Trizin.

    Lama Migmar Tseten has supervised the editing and publication of more than 50 rare volumes of Sakya literature including the 31 volumes of Sakya Lamdre and the rare Golden Manuscripts of the Five Founding Masters. He is the author of many books on subjects from Hinayana, Mahayana, and Vajrayana traditions, including Awakening to the Noble Truth, The Wisdom Gone Beyond, The Tibetan Book of Awakening, Treasures of the Sakya Lineage, and Yoga, Mindfulness and Mantra for Peaceful Living and Dying.

    Lama Migmar Tseten established Mangalam Studio to share free spiritual arts, teachings, and practices publicly via digital media, including the Mangalam Online Course, providing dharma studies and practices worldwide. He leads in-person retreats at Buddhist centers throughout North America and Europe.
