Faculty Bio
Daniel Siegel, MDAuthor, renowned psychiatrist
Dan Siegel received his medical degree from Harvard University and is an internationally acclaimed author, award-winning educator, and renowned child psychiatrist. He is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, where he is also on the faculty of the Center for Culture, Brain, and Development. Also at UCLA, he is a founding codirector of the Mindful Awareness Research Center.
As the executive director of the Mindsight Institute—which offers online learning and in-person lectures focusing on the development of mindsight in individuals, families, and communities—he is also addressing the intersection of human relationships with basic biological processes. As a National Institute of Mental Health Research Fellow at UCLA, he studied family interactions with an emphasis on how attachment experiences influence emotions, behavior, autobiographical memory, and narrative.
Known for his unique ability to make complicated scientific concepts accessible and exciting to a range of audiences, Dr. Siegel has addressed diverse local, national, and international groups, including Pope John Paul II, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the King of Thailand, Google University, London’s Royal Society of Arts (RSA), and TEDx.
His books include Mindsight, Pocket Guide to Interpersonal Neurobiology, The Developing Mind, The Mindful Therapist, The Whole-Brain Child, Brainstorm, and No-Drama Discipline: The Whole-Brain Way to Calm the Chaos and Nurture Your Child’s Developing Mind. He speaks internationally to many different groups, including teachers, mental health and healthcare professionals, business leaders, and to the general public. He lives in Southern California with his family.
