Program Description

In today’s fast-paced world and complex healthcare institutions, many healthcare practitioners feel overwhelmed and experience depression, anxiety, burnout, and other health problems. This retreat at the forefront of the emerging practice of mindfulness is a unique opportunity to nourish your personal and professional development.

Join mindfulness educators Rochelle McLaughlin and Jan Hiley and learn simple tools to manage daily stressors and how to skillfully integrate your own embodied experience into your healthcare practice. This workshop provides a warm, engaging, and dynamic environment to:

  • Discover the accessible and intuitive basics of a mindfulness practice
  • Acquire a knowledge of current and cutting-edge research and skills that support a healthier self, career, and team
  • Experience a variety of specific breath and meditation exercises for the heart, body, mind, and relationships that build compassion and forgiveness
  • Connect in stimulating group dialogue on the first-hand experiences, challenges, and applications of awareness in healthcare settings.

Join us to build a mindfulness-based healthcare community collaborating toward greater and greater degrees of self-compassion, awareness, clarity, and insight. No experience with mindfulness required.

  • Faculty Bio
    Rochelle McLaughlin, MS, OTR/L, MBSR

    Mindfulness instructor, holistic healthcare practitioner

Rochelle McLaughlin has witnessed the integration of mindfulness as a healing balm for the heart, body, mind, and soul as well as a practice for transforming relationships to self and other in her own life and in patient care settings such as mental and physical disabilities, pediatric care, cancer care, and chronic pain.
Her courses on integrating mindfulness and healthcare are rooted in a devotion to help society slow down, to remember our interdependence with each other and nature, and awaken a deep honoring of our human condition: strengthening our capacity for remaining centered in our heart and tethered to our soul, especially in the midst of our troubled times.
She sees our personal practice as a kind of radical activism. It is no small thing. It is profound, life-changing, and in and of itself creates and builds the structure for a new narrative we so desperately need in these times.
Rochelle is committed to a revolution in healthcare, building a vibrant community of practitioners inspired to join us on this journey of weaving mindfulness into institutions and becoming healing agents for meaningful change.
Rochelle is on the faculty in the Department of Occupational Therapy at San Jose State University (SJSU). She is the founding director and lead instructor for SJSU’s Advanced Certificate in Mindfulness-Based Occupational Therapy (MBOT) program, and is a Certified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) teacher. She is also the publisher of Revolutionary Wellness Magazine and the producer of Revolutionary Wellness Talk Radio on Voice America’s Health and Wellness Channel.

    Jan Hiley, MS, OTR/L, MBSR

    Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction teacher

Jan Hiley has been a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) teacher in a variety of community health settings, and is a tai chi instructor. Her areas of clinical practice have included neurological conditions such as stroke, brain injury, geriatrics, chronic pain, and mental health.

Jan’s life and work have been rooted in contemplative practice and the experience of presence as a kind of living medicine, and she is committed to supporting communities in cultivating the integration of practices and ways of being that foster healing, resilience, growth, and well-being.

In these teachings, Jan invites exploration of the experiencing self as a doorway of awareness that encourages intimacy, acceptance, and vitality; strengthening a truer, more heart-centered way of living and being, a deepening sense of our shared humanity, and enhancing access to inner and outer resources in service of the world, with the capacity to sustain the course as we address the challenges of our times.

Along with being an MBSR teacher, Jan is faculty emerita at Cabrillo College’s Stroke and Disability Learning Center and is an instructor for San Jose State University’s Advanced Certificate in Mindfulness-Based Occupational Therapy (MBOT) program.
