What is it like to really hear yourself? Unlike ordinary hearing, it’s like entering a world where you know yourself differently than you did before.
Following certain rules while you write opens a gate to this blissful realm.
The more you immerse yourself in this practice, the further you travel from ordinary self-judgments,and the greater your confidence to think in new ways.
Through Proprioceptive Writing, you can learn to:
- Express unconscious thoughts directly in language
- Hear your thoughts as voices
- Surpass your current thinking
- Practice mental proprioception, the sense by which the mind knows itself.
A simple technique anyone can practice, Proprioceptive Writing (PW) is a powerful tool that can be used to:
- Focus awareness
- Unburden your mind
- Build self-trust
- Liberate your creative energies
If you feel cut off from self-expression, you can reconnect to your authentic voice through PW.
Linda Trichter Metcalf, originator of PW and co-author with Tobin Simon of Writing the Mind Alive, The Proprioceptive Method for Finding Your Authentic Voice, has pioneered writing as a way to heighten consciousness through inner hearing. In this workshop, Linda guides you towards hearing yourself in new, often liberating ways. Find out more about Linda and PW at www.pwriting.org. Linda teaches this course with Anne Bright. A member of the PWC faculty, Anne has taught PW for over 20 years.
Linda Trichter Metcalf, MA, PhD
Teacher, author, and pioneer in mind exploration
Linda Trichter Metcalf, teacher, author, and pioneer in mind exploration, received her graduate degrees in English literature from New York University.
In the mid-1970s, while a professor at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, she created the practice known as Proprioceptive Writing® to help students express their deepest thoughts and feelings.
Since then, Proprioceptive Writing has been brought to elementary school students, homeschool students, medical doctors, and PhD students. It is the only writing practice that encourages participants to slow down their thoughts and focus on what Linda calls “inner hearing,” listening to thoughts with empathy and curiosity, before reflecting on them through writing.
With Tobin Simon, Linda left academia and cofounded the Proprioceptive Writing Center, where she teaches and directs their teacher-training program. In 2002, Linda and Toby published Writing the Mind Alive: The Proprioceptive Method for Finding Your Authentic Voice. In Linda’s workshops, participants hear themselves in new, often liberating ways.View Bio PageAnne Bright, MFA
Anne Bright is director of the Proprioceptive Writing Center, Southeast, and has brought Proprioceptive Writing (PW) to hundreds of students over the past 20 years.
A faculty member of the PW Center in Oakland, California, Anne works closely with PW’s founders, Linda Metcalf and Tobin Simon. She teaches this simple method as a path to self-expression, creativity, and emotional health and a means to gain insight into and power over how we live and think—leading to a renewed sense of well-being and confidence.
Anne has brought her training in the study of literature, writing, storytelling, and theological reflection into her extensive study of PW, which she shares through her center, in schools and universities, and through centers for art, mindfulness, and spirituality.
As well as teaching PW, Anne has written fiction and essays for newspapers and magazines and has performed as a storyteller for both children and adults.
