When facing conflict, we typically try to win, avoid, blame, or even collaborate—often at great cost to ourselves and others. As leaders we have a unique opportunity to embrace the profound wisdom of moving beyond typical, ineffective approaches to conflict with a set of illuminating and empowering disciplines of conflict mastery.

With organizational psychologist Jennifer Goldman-Wetzler, PhD and executive coach Jo Ilfeld, you will discover the power you have to master even the toughest conflicts at work, at home, and in your community—and to help others do the same.

Through a combination of interactive presentations, experiential exercises like role playing, group discussions, and guided mindfulness and walking meditation, you will explore:

  • How to increase your awareness of how you typically respond to conflict and how to identify your ideal and shadow values
  • Mapping out complex conflicts and the characteristics that all difficult conflicts have in common
  • Applications of the disciplines of conflict mastery to sustainably transform a conflict situation that is important to you
  • The three realities of difficult conflict, including learning to accept them and how to transform challenging—even taboo—emotions
  • Imagining and testing optimal outcomes and developing the courage you need to bring lasting change.

You will go home empowered with an effective method you can apply to specific situations to successfully address your own and others’ conflicts with newfound freedom and ease.

Faculty Bio

Jennifer Goldman-Wetzler, PhD

Dr. Jennifer Goldman-Wetzler is an organizational psychologist and founding principal of Alignment Strategies Group. For two decades, she has consulted to senior leaders at global corporations in a wide range of industries, as well as at large nonprofit and governmental institutions.

In the corporate arena, Jennifer helps senior executives and their teams in the technology, pharmaceutical, and financial and professional services sectors lead change.

Jennifer also serves as adjunct professor in the Department of Organization and Leadership at Teachers College, Columbia University, where she teaches the popular course Transforming Conflict from Within, which explores how leaders can successfully face even the most challenging long-term conflicts. She is also an executive coach at the Executive Education Program at Columbia Business School.

Earlier in her career, she was director of negotiation programs at Mediation Works Incorporated, and a facilitator at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School.

Author of Emotions in Long-term Conflict, Jennifer received her bachelor’s degree in social psychology with honors from Tufts University, and holds a PhD in social-organizational psychology from Columbia University.

Jo Ilfeld, PH.D.

An executive leadership coach, Jo Ilfeld Ph.D. works with C-suite leaders, executives and high potential managers to create more impact and influence in their organizations. She works with individuals, teams and organizations on 4 core areas of leadership development: Jo has successfully coached executives and managers, including CEOs, CFOs, Directors and Senior Managers, especially in the field of technology. Her coaching process includes identifying key strengths, creating a clear vision and strategic plan, engaging others in your vision, and key learning through action-taking, with Jo’s ongoing feedback, troubleshooting and accountability.

Jo works with leaders to shift how they manage time, tasks and people for maximum impact and effectiveness. This may include personal productivity, training staff to make their own decisions, building a culture of motivation and loyalty, or learning how to delegate effectively.

Individual leaders and leadership groups need to get things done. Jo helps fast track the habits, communication skills and interpersonal fluency required to move others to action and get great work done.

Leadership presence and powerful body language communicate a strong message. Jo’s focus is on helping leaders effectively communicate with others, both verbally and without saying a word.
