Process Painting

Embracing Your Creative Spirit

1440 Multiversity 800 Bethany Drive Scotts Valley,CA 95066

It’s time to embrace your creativity and dive into the world of process painting, an expressive arts technique and a means of self-exploration that focuses on the process over the final product. You will learn to focus on the inner journey, not the end result, through art.

With roots in Zen, Gestalt psychology, and expressive arts therapy, process painting is a way to learn about yourself and connect with your innate source of creativity. Join renowned artist and therapist Maria E. Mattioli, M.S., MFT, and learn to:

  • Identify blocks that are keeping you back and develop trust in yourself and in the moment
  • Expand your self-awareness and gain confidence in your painting skills
  • Tap into all aspects of your creativity, not just the visual arts.

In this workshop you won’t learn traditional painting techniques or be evaluated for your performance. Instead, Maria creates a supportive and encouraging environment that will encourage you to connect with your inner voice, unique sense of playfulness, and creative freedom. Anyone interested in exploring creativity is welcome.

Faculty Bio

Maria E. Mattioli, M.S., MFT

Maria has been a counseling psychology professor at several Bay Area graduate schools since 1999. Courses she teaches include Couples therapy, Family Systems Theories, Theories for MFT Practice, Gestalt therapy, Bowen Therapy, The Creative Process, Literature and Psychology, Creativity and Psychotherapy, Expressive Arts therapy, and Process Painting.

It is her deep belief that creative self-expression belongs to everyone, not just to those who society deems “talented”. She is dedicated to supporting others in the reintegration of creativity into their every-day lives.

Maria has been a teacher of Process Painting for 20 years. Her connection to this work began in 1987 when she was a work scholar at Esalen Institute, in Big Sur, CA. It was “love at first brush stroke”. Since then she taught this method in a variety of settings, including workshops for psychotherapists in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

She teaches monthly workshops at her studio, SoPa Artspace in Santa Cruz, CA.

She is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists as a continuing education provider for MFT, LCSW, and LPCC.
