Mindful leadership focuses on action. After all, taking effective action is the essential responsibility of a leader. Leading Mindfully helps those in leadership positions, whether in their businesses or communities, hone practices for the core leadership challenge: how to take skillful action in the face of unpredictable and ambiguous situations.

In this workshop, you will learn tools that explore the inner work of leadership to improve the outer work of being an effective leader. With practice, you will gain the capacity to engage your mind to create enhanced results. Leadership experts and executive coaches Jeremy Hunter, PhD, and Lili Powell, PhD, combine powerful experiential and conceptual learning to deliver a practical set of methods for enhancing your impact as a leader.

You will examine how you react to situations and learn:

  • Practical ways to create skillful action amid uncertainty
  • Direct mindfulness practices and their application in a series of exercises
  • Meditation, yoga, and nature-based mindfulness practices
  • How to enhance and shift your attention to more effective patterns of taking action.

This workshop is aimed at leaders in the private, public, and nonprofit sector. You will leave the program with an action plan for practicing leading mindfully at home.

Faculty Bio

Lili Powell, MA, PhD

Lili Powell is a professor at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business, where she teaches MBA, EMBA, and executive education classes in leadership, management, and corporate communication. Dr. Powell has designed and taught courses ranging from the required first year MBA course in management communication to elective courses and executive classes on communicating across cultural boundaries, managing communication as a critical resource, and communicating through leadership presence. Prior to Darden, Dr. Powell taught courses in public speaking, rhetoric, interpersonal communication, and leadership at Northwestern University.

Dr. Powell has authored business case studies and technical notes, has presented her work at numerous conferences, and is coauthor of Women in Business: The Changing Face of Leadership. She is currently writing a new book, Present: Leadership as Wise Practice.

As a consultant, facilitator, instructor, and coach, Dr. Powell has assisted a variety of organizations and universities and serves on the advisory board for the UVA Institute of the Humanities and Global Cultures. She is currently codirector of the MBA/MEd dual degree, designed to promote innovation in education reform.

Jeremy Hunter, PhD

Jeremy Hunter, Associate Professor of Practice and Founding Director of the Executive Mind Leadership Institute at the Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management at Claremont Graduate University, has over a decade’s experience helping leaders develop themselves while retaining their humanity in the face of monumental change and challenge.

His Executive Mind program consists of a series of demanding and transformative executive education courses guided by Peter F. Drucker‰’s assertion that ‰ “you cannot manage other people unless you manage yourself first”.‰  He has been voted Professor of the Year by students five times. Thirteen former students came forward as organ donors when he needed life-saving surgery.

Jeremy, who has a masters of public policy from Harvard and holds a PhD from the University of Chicago is informed by 25 years of experience with Asian contemplative practices. He co-teaches at the University of Virginia’s Darden School Leading Mindfully Executive Education program as well as the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve. He was a research director for the Quality of Life Research Center, which he cofounded with Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and Jeanne Nakamura.

In addition to serving as a senior fellow for the Southern California Leadership Network at the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, Hunter is also part of the executive coaching team with Corporate Coaching International. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, son and two pampered house cats.
