Leading by Being

Learning as a Practice (LeAP)

1440 Multiversity 800 Bethany Drive Scotts Valley,CA 95066

It is clear that leadership needs a new paradigm. Many of our institutions—our schools, workplaces, and civic areas—are in crisis. In today’s world, leadership requires you have more than a master’s degree in business or the skills learned moving up the corporate ranks. Leadership depends on your ability to learn, evolve, and transform. It requires inquiry into a new question: who are you as a human being?

Join the Academy for the Love of Learning founder, Aaron Stern, and a core faculty member, Marianne Murray, for an exploration of what it means to lead from the wholeness of your being—whatever your role or vocation.

Through a carefully orchestrated sequence of conversations, experiential activities, and reflection, you will:

  • Discover a somatic sense of leading and following as dynamic and collaborative processes
  • Recognize learning as an engaged awareness practice essential to any form of leadership
  • Learn a model for working with experience as a catalyst for transformation
  • Connect with your own unique expression and find what supports and thwarts you.

For more than a decade, this course has helped people explore the curriculum that schools generally leave out: who are we and how do we want to be in this world.  Step beyond the habitual nature of daily life, reconnect to your original impulse to lead, and move forward on your path to becoming the person you desire to be.

Faculty Bio

Aaron Stern

Aaron Stern, president and founder of the Academy for the Love of Learning, is a musician, teacher, and internationally recognized consultant on learning.

As the academy’s creative and educational leader, Aaron designs and directs the core curriculum and faculty; guides program development; and offers select trainings in depth-facilitation and diverse aspects of the academy’s pedagogy.

During the early 1980s, while dean of the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, Illinois, Aaron re-met his mentor, musician Leonard Bernstein. Aaron had already begun to imagine a new institution focused on learning, and their conversations and shared experiences further informed his quest to find ways to awaken, nurture, and sustain a lifelong love of learning as a means to becoming more fully human. This early work laid the foundation for what is now the Academy for the Love of Learning, founded by Aaron as a nonprofit “think and do tank.”

Today, he conducts programming, consultancies, and seminars throughout the world and serves as a member of the board and fellow of the Mind and Life Institute, cofounded by the Dalai Lama.

Marianne Murray, MA, PhD

Dr. Murray has been a member of the core faculty of the Academy for the Love of Learning for more than a decade. She has been intimately involved with the development of the core curriculum, helping to establish the academy’s pedagogy. She has a PhD in transformative learning and change in human systems from the California Institute of Integral Studies, a master’s degree in transpersonal psychology, and a master’s degree in mindfulness-based psychotherapy.

In addition to her work with the academy, Dr. Murray is a certified facilitator of Holotropic Breathwork™, a powerful experiential method for healing and self-discovery, and also of Systemic Constellations. She incorporates perspectives from both these disciplines in her depth-facilitation work.

Dr. Murray has been facilitating Holotropic Breathwork workshops since 2004 and is on the Grof Transpersonal Training team, training breathwork facilitators in Europe, India, and the United States. She divides her time between her native England and the American West while maintaining a small psychotherapy practice in the United Kingdom.
