Hiking and Yoga

1440 Multiversity 800 Bethany Drive Scotts Valley,CA 95066

We live in a world where technology and modern life alienate us from our natural rhythms. We experience nature deficit disorder and are not sure how to reconnect with nature and ourselves. Cars and mass transit isolate us from the connective cadence of movement in hiking. Modern yoga has been boxed in by the hardwood floor studio-class experience.

This week, join Laurie Sleep and Lisa Gaillant and step away from your usual routine and experience how three fundamental components of nature, yoga, and hiking can enhance one another, fostering deep connection. Explore the incredible beauty and nature of Santa Cruz—from the towering redwood trees to the stunning coastline—while expanding your perception of hiking and yoga.

You will:

  • Embody a spirit of exploration as you hike to beautiful vistas
  • Practice yoga outside, breathing fresh air and becoming more fully in tune with yourself and the world around you
  • Emerge from your safe zone and tap into more creative energies, which can put personal troubles into perspective.

Plant seeds that help you integrate these three practices into your daily life. Being present in our bodies in nature produces heightened states of awareness that allow for healing and greater joy.

Faculty Bio

Laurie Sleep

Laurie Sleep is a yoga teacher and teacher trainer from San Francisco currently living in New York City. She teaches alignment-based flow classes that focus on cultivating mindfulness through movement.

An avid hiker, backpacker, and nature lover, she also teaches Hiking Yoga and leads retreats and workshops that integrate yoga, hiking, and nature as a way to facilitate connection and groundedness. She co-founded Heart and Hand Yoga Retreats, which creates meaningful trips that combine yoga and mindfulness practice with travel, adventure, and volunteer work.

Laurie earned her initial 500-hour certification through YogaWorks, apprenticing with Jeanmarie Paolillo. She currently studies with Annie Carpenter and has completed over 350 hours of SmartFLOW training. In addition to her yoga teaching and training, Laurie has a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education and over 15 years experience as a classroom teacher, teacher educator, and educational researcher.

Laurie’s yoga classes reflect her extensive background in education. Her clear instruction, intelligent sequencing, and down-to-earth style create a warm and encouraging environment for students of all levels.

Lisa Gaillant

Lisa Gaillant began her yoga practice in her living room with DVDs with Sean Corne and Rodney Yee. As a full-time mom; this was a special time to decompress and renewal. As the kids grew and allotted her more time to dive deeper into the Yogic lifestyle, she started attending classes at a local studio in Redwood City. Lisa continued her journey practicing different styles of Yoga, attending workshops, and eventually completing her 200 hour teacher training certification with Frog Lotus Yoga International with Edna Barr in the summer of 2012.

Enjoying the gorgeous, vast landscapes of the Bay Area’s outdoors is another true love for Lisa. She was able to merge her two passions into one by leading Yoga in the Park classes. Hiking Yoga became another way to share this wonderful combination of soul food. First employed with Eric Kipp and Hiking Yoga in early 2014 to leading her own classes at Lexington Reservoir in Los Gatos. Complimenting her zest for practicing outdoor Yoga, she pursued her certification of Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga with Leigh Claxton at Onboard SUP in Sausalito summer of 2014.

Lisa is a registered Dental Assistant and Massage Therapist with 30 years of experience. She currently works at a pediatric dental office in Palo Alto. She spends her spare time pet sitting, and hiking with her daughters Nadine, Hanna, and her grand dog, Daisy. She believes in the importance of helping others surround themselves in Mother Nature to reconnect and realize what’s most important to healthy living in these times of nonstop technology.
