Moving Beyond our Stories

1440 Multiversity 800 Bethany Drive Scotts Valley,CA 95066

Are you interested in moving beyond unhelpful assumptions about yourself and others? Discover how compassion and mindfulness training, combined with new models of communication, can help you let go of the old stories that rule your life.
Guided by Vinny Ferraro, a mindfulness teacher with an extensive background in social justice, you will spend the weekend exploring your personal conditioning. Once you can see how your stories shape your perception of others, you become free to move beyond your assumptions and see people for who they really are.
In this weekend program, you will learn:

  • Where bias, projection, and cultural conditioning are blocking your own healing
  • How to ask questions and communicate in a non-assumptive way that leaves room for real answers and information to come through
  • Where your personal narrative is keeping you from seeing the truth of yourself, another, or a given situation
  • Mindfulness techniques that can be used in meditation and in your moment-to-moment interactions with others.

As the collective intelligence of the group emerges, you will witness what becomes possible for our communities and society when we are willing to take the risk to see past our old narratives and truly connect and heal that which divides us.

Faculty Bio

Vinny Ferraro

Vinny Ferraro spent most of his teenage life hustling and living on the streets. In 1987, after recovering from drug addiction, he began leading youth groups in drug rehabilitation centers, juvenile halls, schools, and halfway houses for Narcotics Anonymous. He did this work for nearly a decade before moving to a more intensive focus on mindfulness and emotional intelligence work.

Vinny has since become a nationally recognized leader in designing and implementing interventions for at-risk adolescents, and has taught emotional intelligence and mindfulness workshops to more than 100,000 youth and the adults who work with them—teachers, correction officers, social workers, and parents.

He is the principal author of the Mind Body Awareness Project’s mindfulness-based curriculum for incarcerated youth and has received national media coverage for his work with adolescents. He is also the subject of the MTV series, If You Really Knew Me.

Vinny is currently senior faculty for Mindful Schools and the guiding teacher for Against the Stream Buddhist Meditation Society—San Francisco, and leads meditation retreats for adults nationwide. Incidentally, he hates talking about himself in the third person.
