Douglas Brooks is one of the world’s leading scholars of Hinduism and the esoteric traditions of the goddess. An expert in South Asian languages and the comparative study of religions, his work is focused on the study of mythology, linguistics, and Eastern and Western philosophies.
Douglas lived in India for many years with Dr. Gopala Aiyar Sundaramoorthy, a respected scholar of Hinduism and a master in the tantric goddess tradition following the gurukula tradition, in which the student lives with his teacher while receiving instruction. Under Dr. Sundaramoorthy, Douglas studied and practiced Auspicious Wisdom, or Srividya.
Currently a professor of religion at the University of Rochester, he holds a master’s degree in the history of religions from Harvard Divinity School, as well as both a master’s and doctorate in the comparative study of religion from Harvard University. He is the author of numerous books and scholarly articles.
